Dr. Barbara Schellhammer
Dr. (phil.) Barbara Schellhammer, Dipl.Soz.Päd. (FH). Barbara Schellhammer holds a social work degree (specialization in systemic family therapy) from the University of Applied Sciences, Munich and her PhD in philosophy from the Jesuit University, Munich.
As associate faculty in the BA in Justice Studies program at Royal Roads University, Barbara focuses on theories of identity, comprehensive communication skills, ethics (philosophy), cross-cultural competencies (cultural anthropology) and conflict resolution (peace skills).
In September 2009 Barbara was appointed as professor (“International and Intercultural Social Work) at the newly founded International YMCA University of Applied Sciences in Kassel, Germany (www.cvjm-hochschule.de). Besides her teaching obligations she is currently developing an international B.A. program in Human Development and Leadership in Cross-Cultural Dialogue.
Presently her main research interest lies in dialogic strategies to research cultural differences in order to find peaceful means to converse across cultures. She conducted most of her philosophical/anthropological research with the Inuvialuit in the Northwest Territories, Canada and is currently involved in a major research project with the Africa Alliance of YMCAs (comprehensive needs assessment for the development of an “African Renaissance University”).
